Because we understand that Valentine’s-related events is useless to those of you who don’t give a rat’s ass about the day, we are bringing this event to your attention, which is 100 percent Valentine’s Day-free. B-boys and B-girls are gonna duel it out at the Breakin’ the Law NorCal Qualifier, hosted by Sound Samuraiz. Winners get a paid trip to Madison, Wisc., to compete in the Breakin’ the Law elite competition. If you have what it takes, register by posting on the Breakin’ the Law Facebook page or by e-mailing soundsamuraisquad@hotmail.com with your name, crew and hometown. Otherwise, just show up and jam out. Those who jam out in circles will be eligible for prizes. Northstar Zulu DJs Esef and Epik will spin the beats. Doors open at 3 p.m. on Feb. 4, and battles begin at 4:30. Bring $10 to get in, or $5 with an I.D. if you are military or a student, to the Greathouse of Dance at 8117 Auburn Boulevard in Citrus Heights. There is no charge for ages 7 and under.
The current exhibit at MAIYA Gallery, located at 2220 J Street, Suite 1 in Sacramento, is definitely one to stop by and take a look at. Duality, which will be up until Jan. 28, is a group show including works by artists C!nder and Mark Harm Niemeyer, illustrated photographs from Brian Collett, small works of art from Bud Gordon and Maureen Hood and Xist’s King Vader series. MAIYA is an acronym for “My Art Is Your Art.” That’s a perfect description of the vibe at MAIYA; owner Kelly Truscott is perhaps one of the nicest, most welcoming individuals Submerge has met in the local arts scene. Stop in Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. or by appointment to check out the work and to meet Truscott herself. Visit Maiyagallery.com or call (916) 476-3964 for more information.

Our good friend and occasional Submerge contributor Anthony Giannotti recently celebrated his third anniversary for Anthony’s Barber Shop, located at 2408 21st Street in Sacramento. Full disclosure: Giannotti and I hang out all the time and drink tons of booze and stuff, but nonetheless, congratulations are in order. Anthony’s shop may be my favorite place to hang out besides my own couch in my own home. There are interesting people coming in and out all the time (Broadway is close), and there’s always just a bunch of dudes talking shit about random stuff, but in a clean, you-can-bring-your-kids-in-here sort of way. Here’s to many more years of success! For more information, visit Sacramentobarbershop.com.
2011 was a very successful year for the fine folks over at Verge Center for the Arts, located at 625 S Street in downtown Sacramento. To celebrate reaching a recent Kickstarter goal of $7,500, which is surely no small feat, especially considering the amount of online fundraising campaigns Submerge has seen go by the wayside, VCA is throwing a “Verge Ahead” success party on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. Catch live tunes from local favorites Ganglians, Fine Steps, MOM, Gentleman Surfer, Christine Shields, DJ Scott Soriano and DJ Hailey. Check out a huge art installation from artist collective Future Art Notables called Assorted Spaces, play around on a mini-golf exhibit created by VCA artists, drink delicious brew from local beer maker Ruhstaller or a fresh cup of joe from Insight Coffee. The event is for all ages and open to the public. A $15 cover charge includes two drink tickets. If you donated $25 or more to Verge’s Kickstarter campaign, you’ll be on the will call list. The first ever Capitol Comedy Competition is a five-week comedy showcase featuring comics from all over California battling it out for a $1,000 grand prize. The final two weeks of the showcase are Jan. 4 and Jan. 11, 2012. You’ve still got time to catch one of these hilarious shows, all of which take place at Harlow’s. Each week one winner and one runner-up earn themselves a spot in the Jan. 11 finale. The first week’s winner was Insane Wayne Jackson (from Stockton) and the runner up was Tristan Johnson (from Oakland); the second week’s winner was Jay Rick (from Oakland) and the runner up was Anderi Bailey (from Sacramento); and the third week’s winner was Stephen Furey (pictured, from Sacramento) and the runner up spot went to Leroy Stansfield (from Oakland). Week four (Jan. 4) will be hosted by none other than Sacramento’s own rising comic star, Mike E. Winfield, as well as DJ Racer X, and will feature eight comics each with a 15 minute set. There are only two spots left in the Jan. 11 finale—who will it be? The Capitol Comedy Competition is being put on by Conscious Vibes, a local events company that is coming off a huge year where they booked acts such as Dwele, Goapele, Dead Prez, Questlove, Bilal, KRS-One, Planet Asia and many others.
