The Breeders

The Breeders are notoriously slow. After releasing their most successful album, Last Splash, in 1993, the group took a long hiatus (nine years!) before releasing the uneven Title TK. After that, another six years passed before the release of their next album. But are they now picking up the pace? After less than a year, the sisters Deal are back (thank God) with new material. Fate to Fatal is due out April 21. The collection, though brief, is a set of distinctive songs that includes a Bob Marley and the Wailers cover, “Chances Are,” a track that Kim and Kelley Deal recorded live at Steve Albini’s studio in Chicago; the title track, recorded at The Fortress in London; and “Pinnacle Hollow” and “The Last Time,” both of which recorded in Kim’s basement with the latter featuring guest vocals from Mark Lannegan of Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age fame. A video for the title track will feature members of the Arch Rival roller derby team from St. Louis.

The band will self-release Fate to Fatal. The Breeders’ most recent full-length album, Mountain Battles, was released in 2008 and was well received by critics.

In addition to the album, The Breeders will stay busy through spring ’09. The band’s bassist, Mando Lopez, is currently shooting footage for a Breeders documentary, and the band is also performing and curating the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Minehead, England. The lineup will also include acts such as hip-hop artist J-Zone, Los Angeles punk legends X and Bon Iver. The festival dates are May 15 – 17.
